St. Croix Reggae Band, Midnite, Is Coming To Denver

Inity Weekly (CO) and Rockers Movement (NY/FL) are joining forces in celebrating Mandela Day with St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands-based roots reggae band, Midnite. The event will be held on July 18th at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver.

Midnite has gained a massive Grateful Dead-like following and has transcended genres with their experimental and trance reggae sound. The “chant-and-call” style and heavy conscious lyrics of Midnite’s Vaughn Benjamin enhances the band’s music, attracting a diverse, progressive and intellectual crowd.

The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better. It is ultimately a call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them.

We are encouraging people to register an action of service on the Mandela Day website (MandelaDay.com). Individuals and organizations are free to participate in Mandela Day as they wish, as long as there is adherence to the ethical framework of “service to one’s fellow human”. Ultimately, the Mandela Day event featuring Midnite seeks to empower communities in Denver and beyond.

Supporting acts are Ghanaian/Boulder-based Reggae/Afropop band, Selasee and the Fafa Family, and 2014 Westword Music Award nominee, Rastasaurus.

Music for the night will be provided by Nikka T of Joseph Starr Sound, who is also a winner of the Cannabis Cup many times over, as the mastermind of Essential Extracts.

Sad Night At Red Rocks: 3 Injured After Shooting

shooting at red rocks in denver

Denver, Colorado –

Last night following Feed The Rocks fundraising concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater, 3 people were injured when gun fire rang out in the parking lot. Initially The Denver Police Twitter account (@DenverPolice) reported that they were responding to a shooting at 6th and Kalamath. The authorities later confirmed that both scenes were related.

According to officials, a vehicle which was targeted by gunfire fled Red Rocks and drove to 6th and Kalamath where police were called for assistance.

All injured parties in the vehicle were moved to nearby hospitals.

Jeffco Police searched every single vehicle as they left the park.

Various people who attended the concert tweeted that California rapper School Boy Q was the target of the assailants. Neither police, Feed The Rocks or School Boy Q’s team have released a statement confirming or denying that allegation.

However, multiple photos taken by @Karlgehring show a person who looks strikingly familiar to School Boy Q being detained by police at 6th and Kalamath. Another photo shows the victims white SUV with bullet holes in the front windshield.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting should call Jeff Co investigator’s tip line at 303-271-5612

Colorado’s Top 5 Female MCs

Colorado, like many other states is full of rappers, and I’m sure we can all vouch that there’s no shortage either. Well the same doesn’t go for female MCs, especially in Colorado. There’s definitely a shortage in our state, and maybe the same can be said for mainstream hip-hop as well. What happened to the all the MC Lytes, Queen Latifahs, Left Eyes, Lil Kims, Da’Brats, Missy Elliots? I’m sure you can list more, but isn’t it strange that, let’s be honest, the record labels all of a sudden stopped supplying us with a multitude of Female MCs to choose from? No diss to Ms. Minaj & Kreayshawn, but I’m sure there has to be a lot more talented and influential  women out there worthy of our ears and our money.

Well Colorado is lucky to have these 5 ladies below repping for us as well as female emcees everywhere. These ladies stood out for various reasons, and we’d like you to take a few minutes to get yourself acquainted. Click on their names to find out more about them if you’d like.

Lily Fangz

Lily Fangz of Welcome to the Dope Game, first came on our radar at Ru Black and Lizzy Brodie’s Final Friday Rap-A-Thon series last fall. She came, she dropped some fire, then she left. Despite her early departure from the cypher, her flow was on point enough to leave an impression and have us asking what her name was, and where we could find out more about her. She’s doing big things having recently opened up for Red & Meth on 4/20, as well as snagging an opening slot for Feed The Rocks with Nas and School Boy Q. Not to mention the countless other shows she has done and will do in the future. Keep her on your radar!

LPeez

LPeez is nothing less of remarkable when it comes to her lyrical persuasiveness. Her flow will have you believing she’s been in the rap game for decades perfecting her delivery. She’s definitely a candidate for stardom under the right conditions.

Aja Black (of the Reminders)

Aja is the truth. Along side her husband, who together make up The Reminders. She accounts for one whole dose of female dopeness. If the people, and not the record labels made the decision of who in the music world we would want our daughters to idolize, it would be Aja. If you have an opportunity to see her perform live…Do It!

A’Dula

A’Dula is raw. Her lyrics might hurt your feelings, or at the very least offend you. She’s hungry too. She’s on her way to the top, and from our point of view there’s not much in her way either. Once she gains momentum, you’ll be seeing a lot more of her around the city.

Rebel Queen

Rebel Queen, aka Queen V, aka V – when you hear her rap you’ll start paying attention, once you start paying attention, you’re just in awe at how talented she is. From her style to her lyrics she’s the total package as far as the music biz is concerned. Alone she’s a sight to witness, but when she’s teamed up with her brother Napoleon, they become this undeniable hip-hop wrecking crew called Colorado Operations. Rebel Queen could most certainly be the people’s champ if she wanted to…
