Denver Celebrates Mandela Day With Reggae And Poetry

Rockers Movement has partnered with Inity Weekly to unite Denver’s diverse communities in the spirit of service and as a plea to “increase the peace” at this year’s Nelson Mandela Day celebration. The event will be held on Friday, July 17th at 7 p.m. at Casselman’s Bar & Venue in Denver.

The Mandela Day celebration will feature Virgin Islands reggae band, The Akae Beka, with Vaughn Benjamin of Midnite.

They will be supported by The Reminders, the dynamic Colorado based conscious hip-hop act recently featured in the Denver Post, and DJ Milky Dubz.

All acts are known to instill positive and intelligent lyrics into their music, and their contribution to this event will surely catalyze a spirit of positive activism.

It will be The Akae Beka’s first show since what Vaughn Benjamin described as a “life changing last few months” after postponing a tour earlier this year with Midnite.

He says that life changes, convictions, and revelations compelled their new name The Akae Beka, and believes that Denver’s Mandela Day celebration is the perfect platform to debut the new moniker, which falls right in line with their aspirations to educate and encourage activism.

The night will also feature a poetry segment, as well as a live art painting demonstration, all in honor of the fight for justice and the spirit of service that Nelson Mandela committed to others.

Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18, 2009 by a unanimous decision of the U.N. General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made one year earlier, for the next generation to take on the leadership role in addressing the world’s social injustices.

In its first year, the Mandela Day celebration in Denver received a great deal of positive press coverage. Rockers Movement and Inity Weekly received accolades for taking Denver’s thriving live music scene and adding to it a beautifully executed campaign before, during, and after the event that promoted a spirit of service and community.

Now more than ever, it’s crucial to instill a sense of hope and to encourage leadership that will effectively stamp out injustices.

Rockers Movement and Inity Weekly joined forces in 2014, as their ideals for positive change were in line by utilizing the arts as a tool to unite the people.

They are proud to be a part of the Denver community and are grateful for the support received at the 2014 Mandela Day celebration.

They are looking forward to growing the event every year, and more important, increasing the impact the event has on the community.

Featured Album: Wild High – “SDREAMS”

Wild High, one of the newest bands to hit the scene, just released their debut album “SDREAMS” and we must say it is pretty damn swanky. Cody, Clay, Pablo, and Nick managed to fuse the perfect mix of Rock and psychedelic rhythm to give us one of our favorite albums of 2014. The song writing in this album is surprisingly vivid and the vocal ranges compliment the melodies on every track in superb fashion. This is definitely one of those albums you can (and should) bring along with you on your next road trip and add to the playlist at your next shindig. If you like what you hear, show these guys some love @Wild_High.

Sad Night At Red Rocks: 3 Injured After Shooting

shooting at red rocks in denver

Denver, Colorado –

Last night following Feed The Rocks fundraising concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater, 3 people were injured when gun fire rang out in the parking lot. Initially The Denver Police Twitter account (@DenverPolice) reported that they were responding to a shooting at 6th and Kalamath. The authorities later confirmed that both scenes were related.

According to officials, a vehicle which was targeted by gunfire fled Red Rocks and drove to 6th and Kalamath where police were called for assistance.

All injured parties in the vehicle were moved to nearby hospitals.

Jeffco Police searched every single vehicle as they left the park.

Various people who attended the concert tweeted that California rapper School Boy Q was the target of the assailants. Neither police, Feed The Rocks or School Boy Q’s team have released a statement confirming or denying that allegation.

However, multiple photos taken by @Karlgehring show a person who looks strikingly familiar to School Boy Q being detained by police at 6th and Kalamath. Another photo shows the victims white SUV with bullet holes in the front windshield.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting should call Jeff Co investigator’s tip line at 303-271-5612

Birch Street: Mud (Song Review)

“Rock and Roll with a little bit of Country Soul!” This is what Denver local band, Birch Street, labels themselves. This is a perfect description for these country rockers. “Mud” is a song off of their ‘Self-titled’ album: Birch Street. This is the kind of song you’d want to blast before the local rodeo, while on a back country trip with your compadres, or when flourishing your air guitar skills. “Mud” delivers an arena-filled, rock and roll punch along side a whiskey powered country twang.

“I can’t breathe without, a little southern air in my lungs!” Belts lead singer, Jake Langenhorst. “Mud” delivers the listener to the good ol’ southern hospitality of the American south while providing a head banging guitar riff, a silky free-flowing piano player, crashing arena drums and a bass that just doesn’t quit. The lead singer reminisces about the south with soulful shouts and colorful vocals that just make you want to swing. If you’re headed down to dirty Texas, “Mud” will be the chart topper for your back seat!

Featured Song: KL Tha General – “B-Wordz”

KL Tha General has been on quite the Hip-Hop hustle for some time now. From shows, to guest features, to his own songs, he has been hard at work showing a new style of rap from the city of Denver. KL has the charismatic personality to appeal to all audiences. One of his latest songs which was released earlier this year, “B-Wordz”; is a prime example. “B-Wordz” has the potential to be the summer anthem in the city and even nationally if it gets the heat from the right sources.  With a catchy hook, simple bounce beat, and memorable lyrics – KL knows how to  deliver.

“I like her and she like me, but what she don’t know is she can never be wifey. Most time one of my other b**ches see me with her chilling. She’ll get salty and be all up in feelings, cuz I keep alotta b**ches, b**ches, b**ches…”
